Wasted Resources

This article is on the argument against collectors of artifacts but the author fails to notice that much of what is on the market lost its context long ago, true grave robbing is deplorable but that is an issue separate from collecting arrowheads and many other artifacts which had nothing to do with the dead being violated.

It would be very nice and ideal to know where an object comes from and what context it came from unfortunately when a person dies almost everything we have ever owned looses our provenance of having owned those objects. Only those objects which appear in documentation will show that you owned it and these documents will rarely survive the death of its next owner.

That does not make any of those objects sacred it's just STUFF, so know it's a thousand years later and some underpaid archaeologist is carefully excavating the toothbrush I had for a couple of months back in 1974 so that they can put it in a drawer somewhere. Sadly the great drawer that holds everything will only be viewed by a few people with the credentials to be in those toothbrushes presence.

Prohibition never works and archaeological snobbery is a turn off, true buying an artifact creates a market and puts the archaeological sites around the world into the range of economic value. The laws which restrict the sale of antiquities only drive up prices and demand for more artifacts to a hungry populace looking to add to their personal collections.

Prohibition cannot work for it deny's to museums and collectors any future lives in their now closing or closed collections. The Getty museum in California must certainly be poster child for its attempts to put together a collection of antiquities rather late in the game with its important pieces being returned to countries of origin while others still are complete fakes.

Current antiquities laws in countries like Greece, Italy and Egypt only make the sale of antiquities more desirable while they fill drawers with relics of little value and reproduced in such number to be of no institutional value. Why are antiquities laws really just ignoring that these objects have tourism value and dollar value too, not just the arrowheads but real works of arts.

Most of the worlds antiquities museums display only a small fraction of their artifacts with the reserve collections often being in the 10 000's of objects most of which are long forgotten never to teach again.

What a waste of a resource!

A look Inside the New Acropolis Museum

Finally pictures to demonstrate how the new museum will shame the British museum into handing over the Elgin marbles. Athens should be all to careful the overdressed bejewelled lady rarely finds sympathy and there are many people who believe Greece is not powerful enough to posses such marbles for any lengthy period. Plus the British museum has a firman from the then rulers of Greece which gives permission for the marbles to leave the site as Lord Elgin saw fit.

Greece should be offering something for them besides a guilt trip and sad story perhaps the temple of Athena Nike from the Athens acropolis and its sculptures could be given to the British museum who could pay for the Athenian authority to erect a copy paid by the trustees of the British museum and in return the sculptures from the actual Parthenon be given to the Acropolis museum.

Athens Exercise in Pointlessness

Oh yes that new museum built to house things that left with permission 200 years ago is an exercise in pointlessness. Even if they had not been removed for their own safety as the sculptures on the Parthenon were being burned to create lime, after two European wars in the last century Greece is clearly unable to protect them and today they may just as well be in Russia.
